Microsoft has introduced new vernacular features such as translation, voice typing, and transliteration to its India-specific email and SMS app, Outlook Lite.

Microsoft Outlook Lite combines the best of email, and SMS in one place to solve the needs of Indian users. With the latest update, the app has added support for Indian vernacular languages and SMS, allowing users in India to effectively communicate in their preferred regional language.

Currently, the app supports five Indian languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Gujarati, with more to be added soon to cater to the linguistic diversity of India.

With Outlook Lite, users can dictate an email in Hindi, type in Tamil and have it automatically converted to English, or read an email in Gujarati.

Further, Microsoft said that SMS messaging will simplify the way users consume transactional and promotional information by providing a unified and smart inbox that organizes messages by categories, such as transactions, promotions and personal. Users will also get a reminder for important appointments, travel bookings, bill payments, and gas bookings.

The app will soon add support for language translation for SMS messaging too. This will be helpful for users who receive messages in multiple languages or who want to communicate with people from different regions.

"The evolution of Outlook Lite embodies our dedication to fostering inclusive digital experiences tailored for diverse communities in India. With SMS integration and vernacular language support, Outlook Lite redefines communication accessibility and provides users with a more convenient & personalized experience," said Rajiv Kumar, managing director, Microsoft India Development Centre and corporate vice president of Microsoft's Experiences and Devices, India Group.
