Google has added the ability for Meet users to check in to their meeting room directly from the green room using the companion mode on the web. Checking in from the green room will ensure that everyone in the meeting can see your name when you join.

Until now, you were prompted to check in once you were on the call, which is still available if you did not check in from the green room. With this update, when you enter the call, everyone will immediately see your name alongside the conference room you're joining from.

Admins can disable this feature at the organizational unit level for specific hardware devices or users. If enabled by the admin, room check-in will be available for all users joining companion mode from meet.google.com, or by using g.co/companion.

The feature is gradually rolling out to Rapid Release domains starting Feb. 21 and may take up to 15 days to be fully visible. For Scheduled Release domains, the gradual rollout will commence on March 5. It will be available to all Google Workspace customers with Meet Hardware devices.

In a parallel development, Google has announced the general availability of the Google Meet API, which lets you programmatically create and configure Meet calls, retrieve information about past meetings, access meeting artifacts, such as transcripts and video recordings and subscribe to real-time updates on meetings, such as when a participant joins or leaves the meeting.
