Google is rolling out a new feature, markups in Docs, that provides more flexibility when providing feedback in a document. Using the new feature, you can add handwritten annotations to documents with a stylus or your finger on an Android device.

To turn on markups, open a document > select the markups tool from the contextual toolbar and draw with your finger or stylus. Additionally, you can hide or show markups, erase markups and insert suggested markups on Android devices.

On iOS devices and desktops, you can:

  • View a document with markups
  • Delete markups
  • Hide/show markups

Markups in Google Docs can be useful in the following scenarios:

  • Colleagues give each other handwritten feedback on diagrams, charts, reports or proposals.
  • Educators give students feedback on their essays, reports, short stories and more.
  • A homeowner providing ideas or updates on construction plans from their contractor.

The new markups experience in Google Docs is rolling out gradually to Rapid Release domains and may take up to 15 days for the feature to be fully visible. For Scheduled Release domains, the gradual rollout of this feature will commence on March 11, 2024. It will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
