Innovative Uses for Red Mud Explored in High-Level Stakeholder Meeting

Vedanta Aluminium and NITI Aayog held a high-level meeting focusing on sustainable applications for red mud, a byproduct of the bauxite refining process for aluminium production. The session aimed to find effective uses for red mud through research, development, and commercialization, discussing the project's latest findings and future plans.

Vedanta Aluminium, in partnership with NITI Aayog, convened a high-level stakeholder meeting aimed at identifying sustainable applications for red mud, a byproduct generated during the bauxite refining process. According to a release on Thursday, the 8th joint meeting of the monitoring and steering committee for the Technology Development for Holistic Utilization of Red Mud for Extraction of Metallic Values & Residue Utilization project was a focal point of discussions.

Bauxite, the primary ore for aluminium, undergoes a refining stage called the Bayer process to produce alumina. This process yields bauxite residue, commonly referred to as red mud. The day-long session concentrated on innovative ways to utilize red mud through rigorous research, development, and commercialization in other industrial sectors.

As the collaborative project nears a successful conclusion in its testing phase, participants reviewed the latest findings, discussed scale-up plans, and outlined a strategic roadmap for the commercial viability of the project.
