Vedanta Nico Partners with AEsir Technologies to Propel Next-Gen Nickel-Zinc Batteries

Vedanta Nico, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd, has entered a partnership with US-based AEsir Technologies to supply nickel for advanced batteries. The collaboration focuses on developing nickel-zinc batteries for critical infrastructure, 5G telecom, and electric vehicles, aiming to meet the growing global demand for nickel in EV battery technology.

Vedanta Nico, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd, announced on Monday that it has entered into a strategic partnership with US-based AEsir Technologies for the supply of nickel, a crucial component for next-generation batteries.

Nickel plays a pivotal role in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, especially in the cathode, where it enhances energy density, power output, and battery longevity. Nickel-rich batteries, such as nickel-zinc types, offer rapid charging, reduce reliance on cobalt, and boost the overall EV value proposition.

Global demand for nickel in batteries is expected to soar to 500,000 tonnes by 2025, up from 150,000 tonnes in 2020, driven by the expanding EV market. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that the number of electric cars will surge from over 10 million in 2020 to 145 million by 2030, fueled by larger battery capacities, faster charging, and less use of cobalt.

Vedanta Nico, India's leading nickel producer, has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AEsir Technologies, Inc., a US-based leader in advanced battery technologies, to develop and commercialize state-of-the-art nickel-zinc batteries aimed at critical infrastructure, 5G telecom, and EV chargers.

Prashuk Jain, Vedanta Nico's COO, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that combining their nickel production expertise with AEsir's innovative zinc battery technology positions them to deliver a revolutionary product that meets the industry's evolving needs. He emphasized that this partnership aligns with their vision of sustainable mining and value-added products.
