Turkey-Instagram Conflict: Economic Impact and Public Outcry
Turkey's government plans to hold talks with Instagram officials after blocking access to the platform. The move follows accusations of censorship related to condolence posts for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The ban has significantly impacted Turkish businesses, disrupting commerce and hindering personal connections for millions of users.
Turkey's government is set to engage in discussions with Instagram officials on Monday, following last week's blockage of the social media platform, announced Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu on X.
The restriction came after a senior Turkish official accused Instagram of censoring condolence posts for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, assassinated in Tehran on July 31. Meta, Instagram's parent company, expressed concern over the interruption of services affecting millions of users and businesses in Turkey.
Turkey's Head of Communications Fahrettin Altun condemned the platform for what he described as clear censorship. The ban has sparked widespread protests and is estimated to cost the Turkish economy over $11.5 million daily. Both parties are hopeful for a resolution in the upcoming talks.
