An unlocked trunk could interfere with driving vision. Competing in a vital market, Tesla faces increased pressure from Chinese EV makers.
Tesla is recalling 1.68 million cars in China for a remote software update to ensure that the trunks warn the driver when they are not locked shut, according to the country’s market regulator.
The announcement made late Tuesday noted that vehicles with faulty trunk latches will be repaired free of charge. The recall affects some imported Model S and Model X vehicles as well as domestically made Model 3 and Model Y cars produced between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.
The regulator stated that an unlocked trunk could potentially open during driving and interfere with the driver's vision. The electric vehicle manufacturer, based in the U.S., will rectify the issue through a remote software update. China's importance as a market and production hub for Tesla is significant, yet the company is experiencing fierce competition from local electric vehicle makers. Tesla has reported a sharp decline in net income for the second quarter, attributed to reduced sales despite price cuts and low-interest financing.
