TRAI Pushes for Inter-operable Set-top Boxes and Infrastructure Sharing

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced significant recommendations that could alter the landscape of the Indian broadcasting sector. These include the introduction of inter-operable set-top boxes, encouraging voluntary infrastructure sharing among broadcasters, and reducing the minimum net worth requirement for IPTV service providers.

Released under the new Telecommunications Act-2023, which supersedes the Telegraph Act, 1885, these proposals are designed to stimulate growth and simplify business operations within the broadcasting sector. The broadcasting service authorisations are to be issued under the new framework which streamlines processes, aligning them with modern technological and commercial capabilities.

TRAI also suggests technological flexibility in Radio Broadcasting Services, enabling digital adoption. By separating terrestrial radio service authorization from spectrum frequency assignments, TRAI aims to issue spectrum auctions independently, ensuring a more efficient process. Furthermore, radio broadcasting services are urged to adapt to digital, streaming concurrently via the internet.
