In a strategic move to enable the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) without stifling innovation, India plans to rely on existing legal structures rather than introducing new regulations. Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan emphasized this at the Assocham's AI Leadership Meet, marking a cautious yet progressive approach by the government.
The government believes India's robust legal framework, including the Intellectual Property Act and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, already addresses many emerging AI-related issues. The country's focus is on enhancing AI's role in vital sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare to boost productivity and meet the national goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.
Krishnan acknowledged potential job displacement due to AI but highlighted India's unique advantage in adopting AI applications. He stated that India's human resources are well-equipped to navigate the AI transition effectively. The AI Leadership Meet was a precursor to the AI Impact Summit 2026, planned for February 2026 in New Delhi.
