Rwanda is pondering over creating a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST) in the next five years down the line, according to an official from the Ministry of Infrastructure.

Robert Nyamvumba, Ministry of Infrastructure (Energy Division Manager) opined that talks are underway with Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, to set up the centre as soon as possible.

“Rwanda envisions having a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in the nearest future,” he said in an exclusive interview with The New Times on the sidelines of an international forum on nuclear energy in Russia.

Named XI International Forum and Atomexpo 2019, the forum commenced in the Russian southern city of Sochi under the auspices of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM), one of the world’s most experienced providers of nuclear energy services.

Rwanda had signed a cooperation agreement with Russia in 2018 on the utilization of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Now talks are going on to ensure how the soft and physical infrastructure can be set up to pave way for nuclear energy development so it can be used in different areas such as agriculture, medicine, education, and electricity generation.

This will help Rwanda and Russia to establish study programmes, which will further benefit Rwandans in acquiring advanced knowledge in nuclear sciences. The University of Rwanda will also provide training to the students from the undergrad level, and master’s level to PhDs.

“A timeframe is being discussed, we are looking at 2023-2024. We are moving aggressively to see the centre established in Bugesera industrial park,” Nyamvumba added, as reported by The New Times.
