The Google News Initiative has collaborated with the Columbia School of Journalism to offer a curated program to meet the needs of journalists in the Asia Pacific. The program is part of Google's efforts to work with the news industry to help journalism thrive in the digital age.

The GNI newsroom leadership program is aimed at mid-career journalists and includes four weeks of onsite courses at Columbia University in New York City and Google offices in Silicon Valley and Asia. The program aims to enhance the leadership skills and nimble decision-making capacity of emerging newsroom leaders in the Asia-Pacific region, with particular focus on applied technology, audience-centric behaviours, design thinking, data applications, understanding business models and editorial innovation. The focus will be on applying the learnings to both the Asia-Pacific region as well as to help the Fellows think through their specific projects.

"Each Fellow will also work on a specific project during the year that is relevant to their newsroom within the main fellowship topics: technology, monetization, and data. Ten fellows from the Asia-Pacific region will learn how to lead through change in this fast-moving environment and identify opportunities for entrepreneurship within their newsrooms," Irene Jay Liu, Google's News Lab lead for APAC, wrote in a blog post.

Applicants must submit all required materials in a Google Document and linked in the Google Form by June 26, 2019. The application process will be fully managed by the Google News Initiative with its curated vetting partner institutions based in the Asia-Pacific region.
