YouTube announced Wednesday a series of policy and product changes to tackle harassment on its platform. From private individuals to YouTube creators, to public officials, the updated policies will be applicable to everyone.
Along with explicit threats, the video-streaming platform will now ban 'veiled or implied threats' that suggest any kind of violence, including content simulating violence toward an individual or language suggesting physical violence may occur. In addition, the platform will also ban content that maliciously insults someone based on protected attributes such as their race, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
We remain committed to our openness as a platform and to ensuring that spirited debate and a vigorous exchange of ideas continue to thrive here. However, we will not tolerate harassment and we believe the steps will contribute to our mission by making YouTube a better place for anyone to share their story or opinion
To address repeated harassing behavior, the Google-owned video platform has also tightened its policies for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) that allows creators to make money via eligible content on the platform.
As per the updated policy, channels violating the harassment policy will be suspended from YPP and their content may also be removed if the harassment continues. The platform could also take more severe action including the termination of the entire channel.
Furthermore, the updated policies will also apply to comments. Youtube already removes comments that clearly violate its policies and also provides a variety of tools that allow creators to review the comments before they are posted on their channel.
As we make these changes, it's vitally important that YouTube remain a place where people can express a broad range of ideas, and we'll continue to protect discussion on matters of public interest and artistic expression. We're committed to continue revisiting our policies regularly to ensure that they are preserving the magic of YouTube, while also living up to the expectations of our community.
