Mumbai Train Chaos: Cable Cut Causes Major Delays

Mumbai commuters faced severe disruptions as technical issues due to cable cuts at Borivali station led to widespread delays and cancellations of local trains on the Western Railway network. Monsoon preparatory work was cited as the cause, with a swift response restoring some services but continued challenges for riders.

Commuters in Mumbai encountered significant disruptions on Monday, as technical issues stemming from cable cuts at Borivali station led to severe impacts on local train services across the Western Railway network, a key route in north Mumbai.

The incident, which took place around 2 am, prompted the cancellation of several suburban services and widespread delays. Western Railway officials, who worked tirelessly to resolve the issue, managed to restore services after approximately 11 hours of work.

A senior Western Railway official informed PTI that monsoon preparatory work was the root cause, with the cable cut occurring during excavation for a drain at Borivali on Sunday night. Chief PRO of Western Railways, Sumit Thakur, announced on social media that platforms no. 1 and 2 were affected but reassured that other platforms were functioning normally.

Thakur highlighted the swift action of the technical team, noting that platform no. 1 was operational by 12.05 pm and platform no. 2 by 1.30 pm. Additional local trains were deployed to assist passengers during the disruption.

To ease the commuter strain, extra Metro services were introduced, managing the influx from the delays on the Western Railway network. Despite the restoration efforts, some travellers continued to experience 15-20 minute delays on suburban services. Passengers took to social media to vocalize their frustrations and share footage of the station chaos.

With the Western Railway normally operating over 1,300 suburban services for around 30 lakh daily passengers between Churchgate and Dahanu, additional services were crucial. In response to the increased demand, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited ran extra services along Metro Lines 2A and 7, addressing the overcrowding at key stations like Borivali, Kurar, and Rashtriya Udyan.

The Metropolitan Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority ensured additional Metro line services to ease the rush until stability was achieved. As the Western Railway network gradually resumes regular operations, authorities remain vigilant, implementing measures to ensure commuters have a smoother experience.
