EIB to Provide €87M Loan to Castilla y León for Green, Social, and Digital Investments
The €87 million loan marks the first tranche of financing amounting to €290 million approved by the EIB for the regional government of Castilla y León.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has inked a significant €87 million loan agreement with the regional government of Castilla y León in Spain. The loan aims to co-finance a series of green, social, and digital investments in the region, aligning with the priorities outlined in the 2021-2027 operational programmes of EU cohesion policy funds, including the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), and the Just Transition Fund.
Key highlights of the agreement include:
Scope of Financing: The €87 million loan marks the first tranche of financing amounting to €290 million approved by the EIB for the regional government of Castilla y León. The funds will support a wide range of projects, including education and training, research, development, and innovation, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-caps, as well as initiatives focused on the energy transition and energy efficiency.
Beneficiaries: The regional government estimates that the investments supported by the EIB will benefit the entire population of Castilla y León, comprising approximately 2.3 million people. This underscores the broad impact and reach of the projects aimed at fostering sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
Green and Digital Transition: The agreement underscores the EIB's commitment to facilitating the dual green and digital transition in Castilla y León, enhancing business competitiveness, and promoting sustainable urban development. By supporting initiatives in these key areas, the EIB aims to contribute to the region's long-term resilience and prosperity.
Territorial Cohesion: The financing aligns with the EIB Group's commitment to promoting economic, social, and territorial cohesion, a core priority and cross-cutting objective. All projects supported by the loan will be implemented within Castilla y León, which is classified as a transition region by the European Union due to its gross domestic product per capita falling between 75% and 100% of the EU average.
The agreement between the EIB and the regional government of Castilla y León underscores the importance of strategic partnerships and sustainable investments in driving inclusive growth, fostering innovation, and advancing the transition towards a green and digital economy. Through this collaboration, both parties aim to address key development challenges while seizing opportunities for sustainable development and prosperity in the region.
