Amid concerns about market fluctuations, India reassured its citizens on Thursday about the sufficiency of its wheat stocks to meet domestic requirements and intervene in the market if needed to keep prices stable. The government confirmed that there are no plans to alter the import duty on wheat at this time.
The Department of Food and Public Distribution, overseen by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, is vigilantly monitoring wheat prices. According to a statement, appropriate measures will be taken to prevent hoarding by unscrupulous entities and to ensure price stability.
During the 2024 rabi marketing season, India produced 112 million tonnes of wheat. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has so far acquired around 26.6 million tonnes, ensuring sufficient stock for public distribution and market stabilization. As of January 1, 2024, wheat stocks were recorded at 16.35 million tonnes, significantly above the buffer norm of 13.8 million tonnes. Presently, there are no proposals to modify the import duty structure for wheat.
