At least 23 people were killed, and 13 injured after a bus crashed on the Los Libertadores highway in Peru's Ayacucho region. The bus skidded off the road, overturned, and fell 200 meters down a slope. Investigations into the accident's cause are ongoing.
In a tragic incident on Tuesday, at least 23 people lost their lives, and 13 sustained injuries when a bus crashed while navigating through a mountainous area in Peru, the country's interior ministry reported.
The accident occurred on the Los Libertadores highway in the Andean Ayacucho region. According to Jhonny Rolando Valderrama, head of the highway protection division, the bus skidded off the road, overturned, and plunged down a 200-meter slope. Rescue operations are still underway.
Peru's ground transportation superintendent, SUTRAN, confirmed that the bus was owned by local company Turismo Molina Union SAC and stated that an investigation had been launched. Representatives of the company were unavailable for comment. Bus accidents are frequent in Peru due to precarious mountain roads and under-trained drivers, with similar tragic incidents happening earlier this year and last year.
