The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, which is set to place Mizoram on the country's railway map, is expected to be commissioned by July next year, officials announced on Friday.
Nearly 93 percent of the construction on the 51.38-km line has been completed, according to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officers who provided an update to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati during a project review meeting.
The railway line includes four stations - Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang, with officials indicating that the line up to Hortoki will be operational within the next few days.
Officials reported a successful trial run on the Bairabi-Hortoki section and projected the commissioning of services to Mualkhang station in the coming months.
The line is expected to reach Sairang, near Mizoram's capital Aizawl, by July next year, enhancing the state's economic and tourism prospects.
Governor Kambhampati emphasized that the completed project will reduce travel time from Assam to Mizoram and lower transportation costs significantly.
Sanctioned in the 2008-09 period, the project has a revised estimated cost of Rs 8,213.72 crore. Construction commenced in 2015 and includes 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels along the route from Bairabi on the Assam-Mizoram border.
