Tesla Recalls 1.8 Million Vehicles Over Hood Latch Concerns

Tesla is recalling more than 1.8 million vehicles due to a hood latch issue that could elevate the risk of a crash.

The recalls involve 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles, primarily because the hood latch assembly may fail to detect an unlatched hood after being opened.

Such a failure could cause the hood to swing open while driving, potentially obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of an accident. Tesla is unaware of any related crashes, injuries, or fatalities.

Elon Musk's company began assessing customer complaints concerning Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China on March 25. By mid-April, the automaker identified the problem as latch switch deformation, primarily affecting vehicles in China.

Tesla's ongoing investigations revealed a higher occurrence rate of the issue in China than in Europe and North America, although the reason remains unclear. As of July 20, Tesla identified three warranty claims or field reports in the U.S. potentially connected to this issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed a free software update from Tesla to address the malfunction. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 22.
