Boeing Appoints Industry Veteran amidst Financial Struggles
Boeing reported significant financial losses and announced the appointment of Robert 'Kelly' Ortberg as the new CEO. Revenue fell 15%, and both commercial and defense segments suffered. The company faces scrutiny over safety issues, supply chain problems, and regulatory hurdles. Shares rose slightly despite challenges.
Boeing has posted more than USD 1.4 billion in losses for the second quarter, attributing the setbacks to weak performance across its divisions. In a bid to steer the company through its turbulent period, Boeing has appointed industry veteran Robert 'Kelly' Ortberg as its new CEO, effective next week.
Ortberg, aged 64 and a former CEO at Rockwell Collins, steps in to replace David Calhoun. The leadership change comes amidst Boeing's underwhelming financial results, which have performed below Wall Street expectations. Revenues plunged by 15% compared to last year, with both the commercial-airplanes and defense units recording losses.
The already embattled company faces increased oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration following safety scandals, including the Max aircraft crashes that claimed 346 lives. Additionally, Boeing is grappling with supply-chain disruptions and regulatory approvals for new aircraft models. Despite these challenges, shares of Boeing rose more than 3% before Wednesday's market opening.
