The Government of India, collaborating with state governments, is swiftly implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal, targeting tap water supply for every rural household. Launched in August 2019, only 3.23 crore rural households, or 16.8 per cent, initially had tap water access.
As per the Ministry of Jal Shakti's press release, by August 1, 11.80 crore more rural households gained tap water connections. Hence, 77.83 per cent of the 19.32 crore rural households now have access. Eleven states and union territories have achieved complete coverage under 'Har Ghar Jal'. The rest are making varied progress. A detailed state-wise status is available on the JJM dashboard.
Numerous hurdles, such as water source scarcity in stressed regions, groundwater contamination, uneven terrains, and delays in state funding, pose challenges. The Government of India introduced several initiatives, including the Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure, providing 50-year interest-free loans. Nodal officers and various program units support the mission, while community-based water conservation efforts and skilled local personnel programs enhance efficiency.
