Chennai Beach–Egmore Fourth Line Project Nearing Completion Amid Full Swing Construction

Southern Railway's Chennai Beach–Egmore fourth line project is progressing rapidly. The Rs 274 crore initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and decongest existing lines. While MRTS services are temporarily suspended, work continues with approval awaited for a crucial land exchange with the Navy. The project promises improved connectivity and increased train frequencies.

Southern Railway announced on Thursday that the construction of the Rs 274 crore Chennai Beach–Egmore fourth line project is progressing rapidly, promising significant benefits like decongested existing lines and enhanced rail network efficiency.

This major infrastructure endeavor spans 4.30 km between Chennai Beach and Egmore, with temporary suspension of MRTS services facilitating the construction work. The project faces a slight delay in a 110-metre section pending land exchange with the Navy, approved earlier this year but awaiting final permission.

Authorities assure that once permissions are cleared, work will swiftly resume, aiming to start MRTS services within a month. The project is set to increase long-distance and freight train frequencies, boosting connectivity and operational efficiency in Chennai's suburban rail network.
