India's IPO market experienced a significant resurgence in 2024, with a total of 272 companies making their debut, up from 164 the previous year, according to a report by SEBI. This uptick was driven by strong secondary markets, enthusiastic retail investors, and solid institutional inflows.
"Following a period of moderation in 2022-23, the equity segment saw a resurgence in fundraising activities. The IPO market was vibrant with 272 companies going public compared to 164 last fiscal year," SEBI reported. Additionally, India attracted a record foreign investment of Rs 3.4 lakh crore in 2023-24, the highest since 1992-93.
"Compared to net outflows of Rs 40,936 crore in 2022-23, foreign portfolio investors injected Rs 3.4 lakh crore into India during 2023-24," SEBI highlighted. Foreign portfolio and venture capital investments are vital for emerging economies like India. The fiscal year 2023-24 marked an exceptional period for foreign portfolio inflows into the country.
SEBI attributed this record foreign investment to factors such as India's growth resilience, financial stability, controlled inflation, and fiscal consolidation. In contrast, advanced economies faced persistent inflation and geopolitical uncertainties. Despite a subdued global economy with recession risks and monetary tightening, India's economic outlook remained robust, fueled by a boost in manufacturing and service sectors, easing inflation, and strong market performance.
Sector-wise, the report detailed that out of Rs 64.2 lakh crore in FPI-held equity assets, Rs 18.6 lakh crore were invested in financial services, followed by oil, gas, and consumable fuels at Rs 6.0 lakh crore, information technology at Rs 5.9 lakh crore, and the automobile industry at Rs 4.8 lakh crore.
