The upcoming week in the stock market will be shaped by global events, including international market performance, U.S. recession fears, and key domestic macroeconomic indicators such as IIP, CPI, and WPI inflation data, according to market analysts. Attention will also focus on the conclusion of the earnings season.
'Looking ahead, global market performance, especially in the U.S., will provide directional cues,' said Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking Ltd. 'Domestically, attention will also be on the earnings season's conclusion and key macroeconomic indicators like IIP, CPI, and WPI inflation data,' he added.
Vinnaayak Mehta, Founder and Managing Partner of The Infinity Group, expressed confidence in the resilience of the Indian markets despite short-term volatility caused by global factors. Indian markets saw heightened volatility, closing lower for the second straight week on August 9, with both Nifty and Sensex indices experiencing significant losses amid global turmoil on August 5.
Indian markets rebounded in subsequent trading days but maintained a cautious stance due to concerns over a potential U.S. recession and escalating tensions in the Middle East. By week's end, Nifty and Sensex had both fallen roughly 1.5%, closing at 24,367.50 and 79,705.91 respectively. Most sectors, excluding defensive ones like pharma and FMCG, faced selling pressure, with metals, energy, and financial sectors as the top losers.
Midcap and smallcap indices also recorded losses between 1% and 2%. According to market analysts, the Nifty index is consolidating within its short-term moving averages and a breakout from this range would likely determine the next directional move.
'Should a breakout occur, the index could advance towards 24,700 to fill the gap on the daily chart,' Mishra said. 'Key support is positioned between 23,450-23,700 in case of further declines.' Experts advise traders to manage positions cautiously with a strong emphasis on overnight risk management due to mixed sector trends.
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers in the Indian market for the week of August 5 to 9, offloading equities worth Rs 12,404.73 crore, according to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). Despite this, domestic institutional investors remained net buyers, compensating for the outflows, with a net gross purchase totaling Rs 23,500.01 crore in August, NSE data showed.
