On World Elephant Day, World Animal Protection has appealed to the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, expressing deep concern over the plight of elephants used for rides at Amer Fort in Jaipur. The organization seeks intervention to end the ongoing suffering of these majestic animals.
Rajasthan, not being a natural habitat for elephants, houses around seventy elephants in Amer Fort and Haathi Gaon. Extensive studies reveal these elephants face severe deprivation and cruel treatment. A Supreme Court case addressing the abuse of India’s National Heritage Animal has been ongoing since 2014. Post-pandemic, there's a global shift towards humane tourism, and the organization urges Rajasthan's government to support the transition of these elephants to sanctuaries.
World Animal Protection emphasizes the need for a feasibility study and is ready to assist in ensuring these elephants are retired peacefully. The organization has engaged with the government and public to raise awareness, and several tour companies have pledged to stop offering elephant rides. They hope Jaipur can set a precedent for humane animal treatment across India.
