Japan's Economy Surpasses Expectations with Robust Q2 Growth

Japan's economy grew by an unexpected annualised 3.1% in Q2, driven by strong private consumption and backed by possible further interest rate hikes. While private consumption saw significant growth, lingering challenges remain with rising living costs and potential global economic downturns.

Japan's economy experienced a surprising annualised growth rate of 3.1% in the second quarter, rebounding from an early year slump. This unexpected surge is largely attributed to a significant rise in private consumption, supporting the case for another imminent interest rate hike.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) had predicted that a steadfast economic recovery would help achieve its 2% inflation target sustainably. Government data indicated a stark contrast from the 2.3% contraction in the first quarter to an impressive quarterly rise of 0.8%, surpassing economists' expectations of a 0.5% increase.

Kazutaka Maeda, an economist at Meiji Yasuda Research Institute, remarked, "The results are positive overall, with signs of private consumption picking up due to real wage growth." As private consumption, which makes up over half of the economic output, rose by 1.0%, public discontent over rising living costs remains a significant issue.
