Heathrow Border Force Staff Strike Threatens Peak Travel Period
Hundreds of Border Force staff at Heathrow Airport are set to strike from Aug. 31 to Sep. 3 during a peak travel time. The PCS union members' four-day action will be followed by over two weeks of additional industrial action due to changes in terms and conditions, risking significant travel disruptions.
Border Force staff at Britain's largest airport, Heathrow, are slated to strike from Aug. 31 to Sep. 3, coinciding with a peak travel period for thousands of holidaymakers.
The PCS union announced that 650 members would engage in the four-day strike, which will be succeeded by over two weeks of industrial action due to disputes over changes to terms and conditions, including new inflexible rosters. These changes, they say, have forced the industrial action, which may cause significant disruptions at the end of Britain's school summer holidays.
PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote stated that the strike could be averted if the employer addressed members' concerns. Britain's interior ministry, responsible for border force officers, has yet to comment on the matter. In contrast, Heathrow Airport emphasized past cooperation with Border Force to minimize disruption during strikes.
