In a recent report by the National Sample Survey Survey (NSSO), the unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 years and above in urban areas remained unchanged at 6.6% during the April-June quarter of FY24.
This stability in the unemployment rate underscores ongoing employment challenges within urban settings. The quarterly bulletin revealed that the female unemployment rate dropped slightly to 9% from 9.1% in the previous year, while male unemployment fell to 5.8% from 5.9%.
Additionally, the labour force participation rate rose to 50.1% in urban areas, indicating a marginal increase in workforce engagement. These findings are part of the 23rd Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the employment landscape in urban India.
