An alarming deterioration in household (HH) income levels in India continues, according to a recent report by 'Systematix Institutional Equities.' The decline is contributing to broader structural issues as highlighted by various annual surveys and data sets including the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Household Consumer Expenditure Survey (HCES).
The report underscores that despite the possibility of a favorable monsoon, increased government spending aimed at boosting rural incomes appears to be the primary solution to counteract this ongoing structural drag. However, the diminishing real HH income, which accounts for 78% of GDP, indicates that any economic recovery will be slow and arduous.
In the consumer discretionary sector, subdued demand persists, with value fashion retailers being a notable exception due to steady margins. The Reserve Bank of India's regulatory tightening has further slowed retail loan growth, most significantly impacting credit card loans. Companies remain cautiously optimistic about a recovery in rural demand, driven by distribution expansion ahead of festive seasons.
