Railway Safety Bolstered: Kavach Automatic Train Protection System Trials Successful

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System trials between Sawai Madhopur and Indargarh stations. The system successfully handled various emergency scenarios, automatically applying brakes when necessary. Kavach aims to be operational across the nation's rail network in five to six years.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday reviewed the trial of the Automatic Train Protection System 'Kavach' between Sawai Madhopur and Indargarh Railway stations in the West Central Railway Zone.

Travelling in a Kavach-fitted train engine, Vaishnaw observed as the train, speeding at 130 kmph, automatically halted 50 meters before a red signal without manual intervention. According to officials present during the trial, Kavach was tested for seven emergency scenarios and performed flawlessly in each instance.

The Railway Ministry has announced that work is underway to operationalize the Kavach system on major routes including the 3,000 km Mumbai-Delhi and Delhi-Kolkata tracks, with future plans for another 6,000 km. Developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation, Kavach can automatically apply brakes in emergencies, offering improved safety across diverse geographical conditions.
