India's tourism and hospitality sector is set to require over 61 lakh additional workers by 2036-37, as outlined in a new report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and EY. The whitepaper, presented at the 18th Annual CII Tourism Summit, provides an analysis of employment trends and emphasizes the sector's pivotal role in economic growth.

Currently contributing 8% to India's total employment, the tourism industry is rebounding robustly post-pandemic, driven largely by domestic tourism. The sector's spending is projected to increase by 1.2 times by 2036-37, necessitating a workforce expansion that includes 46 lakh males and 15 lakh females.

Highlighting its economic significance, India's tourism directly contributed over USD 231 billion to the GDP in 2023, climbing to second in the Asia-Pacific region. To meet demand, the report recommends enhancing skills in digital marketing, sustainable tourism, and customer service, alongside fostering collaboration between stakeholders.
