The Indian stock markets experienced continued selling pressure on Wednesday, with both indices starting in the red. The Nifty 50 index recorded a dip of 21 points, opening at 23,050, while the BSE Sensex saw a decline of over 114 points, starting the day at 76,179 points.
Experts attributed the market pressure to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and steady foreign institutional investor selling. A crucial meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump is in focus, with hopes of discussions on defense, energy cooperation, and a possible solution to tariff issues. Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert, highlighted concerns over the US-imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. He advised caution due to ongoing FPI sales and impacts on small and midcap stocks, while keeping an eye on US Core CPI figures, which, if higher than expected, could lead to market volatility.
Sector-wise, oil and gas took the hardest hit, while the Nifty Media index led gains. In Nifty 50, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, TCS, Wipro, and HCL Tech showed positive performances, with Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance, and Apollo Hospitals among the top losers. Broader benchmarks particularly underperformed, signaling a mature stage of decline that could precede a rebound. For the day, key support was identified between 22,900 and 22,970, with resistance expected between 23,250 and 23,300, according to Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities.
Several major companies, including Hindustan Aeronautics and Siemens, are set to release their Q3 results. Meanwhile, in other Asian markets, gains were noted across the board except for Taiwan's Weighted Index, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index showing a significant rise of over 1.9%.
