Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken action against the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to rectify anomalies caused by a recent metro fare increase in Bengaluru.
Various commuters and opposition parties expressed outrage after fares were reported to have more than doubled in certain areas, despite an official statement announcing a 50% fare increase. In response, Siddaramaiah directed BMRCL to reduce fares viewed as excessively elevated and protect commuter interests.
This fare adjustment has triggered a political dispute between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. Both parties have accused each other of being responsible for the fare hike, leading to protests and demonstrations across several metro stations in the city.
