India's Largest LPG Cavern Set for 2025 Debut

India's largest LPG cavern, constructed by HPCL, is slated to become operational by April 2025. Situated in Mangalore, this engineering marvel has an impressive storage capacity of 80,000 Metric Tons. Strategically located, it's designed to bolster LPG supply across southern and central regions of the country.

India's most extensive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cavern is poised to become operational by April 2025, according to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Director, Amit Garg, during India Energy Week 2025. Located at HPCL's Mangalore import facility, this cavern is engineered to hold 80,000 Metric Tons of LPG, marking a significant milestone in industrial engineering.

The cavern, nestled within granitic gneiss, employs hydraulic containment to secure the gas. Garg highlights the structure's floor, which sits 141 meters below mean sea level, with an operating shaft plunging to 156 meters, showcasing groundbreaking engineering depth. The hydrostatic pressure ensures the LPG remains well-contained.

Constructed through the 'drill and blast' method, the project incorporates four significant components, including an extensive access tunnel and intricate water curtain galleries to guarantee safe LPG storage. Its strategic location facilitates seamless distribution to cater to India's burgeoning energy demands, promising enhanced LPG supply across southern and central regions.
