New Urea Plant to Boost North East's Economy

The Center will establish a new urea plant in Namrup, Assam, costing Rs 10,000 crore. The project will be completed in 3.5 years, providing 1,950 jobs. With a capacity of 12.70 lakh tonnes, it aims to reduce imports and potentially export to neighboring countries.

The Indian government has announced plans to set up a state-of-the-art urea plant in Assam's Namrup, a project expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the region. The new facility, slated for completion in three and a half years, involves an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.

Leader of the initiative, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers, Rajat Kumar Mishra, highlighted that the plant will have an annual production capacity of 12.70 lakh tonnes of urea. The plant is strategically designed to meet the urea demands of the North East and Eastern India while potentially exporting surplus production.

The endeavor, part of the 2025-2026 budget announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, will generate 1,950 new employment opportunities. By doing so, it aims to reduce India's reliance on urea imports. The project will utilize a mix of local and imported natural gas in producing urea and is exploring the feasibility of diverse agricultural product lines, including nano fertilizers.
