President Museveni Unveils Plan for Egg Processing Factory to Boost Economy and Food Security
President Museveni cited Uganda's successful dairy industry as an example of how value addition boosts exports.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced the government's plan to establish an egg processing factory to add value to Uganda's growing egg production, enhance food security, and tap into international markets.
During a visit to Ms. Akampurira Evas, a poultry farmer and Parish Development Model (PDM) beneficiary in Bubare trading center, Rubanda district, President Museveni emphasized the importance of value addition to agricultural products. He proposed converting surplus eggs into products such as powdered and liquid eggs, baby foods, and nutritional supplements for the elderly and sick, which can be exported for higher profits.
President Museveni cited Uganda's successful dairy industry as an example of how value addition boosts exports. "In Nyabushozi, we process and export milk because Ugandans cannot consume it all. We can do the same with eggs," he remarked.
The President highlighted the 4-acre model for wealth creation, advising small-scale farmers to plant coffee, fruits, food crops, and pasture while integrating poultry, piggery, and fish farming for additional income.
Ms. Akampurira shared her PDM success story, revealing that her initial investment of UGX 1 million in poultry earned her UGX 7.95 million through egg and pig sales, enabling her to pay her children's school fees.
The Minister of State for Finance, Hon. Henry Ariganyira Musasizi, reported that over UGX 14 billion has been distributed to PDM SACCOs in Rubanda's 70 parishes, while the newly commissioned Mirama-Kabale power line aims to drive industrialization in the region.
President Museveni encouraged residents to prioritize income-generating projects, noting that while infrastructure like roads and hospitals is vital, it does not directly eliminate household poverty.
The event, attended by Vice President H.E. Jessica Alupo, ministers, and local leaders, is part of the President's PDM and wealth creation assessment tour in the Kigezi sub-region, where he will meet more beneficiaries and address public rallies.
