India is increasingly becoming a focal point for global oil and gas companies, marking its transition from being a cost-effective back-office hub to a strategic center for research and development. This shift was highlighted during India Energy Week 2025, specifically in a session discussing the evolution of India's Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in oil and gas R&D.
Industry heavyweights such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, BP, and SLB shared their positive experiences and future outlooks. Monte Dobson, CEO of ExxonMobil India, praised the vast talent pool in India as a key advantage, while Ajay Mehta from Shell noted the diminished role of wage arbitrage in their Indian operations. Shell's GCCs in Chennai and Bengaluru are instrumental in global engineering and tech efforts, serving 35 global assets.
The growth trajectory is evident with companies like BP, which has expanded to over 4,000 employees since 2021, playing a crucial role in developing cutting-edge technologies. SLB, an early entrant in 2006, now boasts 5,000 employees across multiple centers in India. Dr. Alok Sharma of IndianOil Corporation emphasized India's R&D strides towards energy transition goals, predicting the energy equipment sector could hit $200 billion globally by 2030. With numerous opportunities unfolding, India's growing GCC capabilities could significantly increase its market share.
