The New Zealand Government has announced the appointment of agricultural industry leader Rob Hewett as the new Chair of AgriZeroNZ, a public-private joint venture dedicated to reducing on-farm emissions. The announcement was made by Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis and Agriculture Minister Todd McClay. Hewett will serve a three-year term from 3 February 2025 to 3 February 2028.
Rob Hewett, an experienced chair in the energy and agricultural sectors and a farmer himself, was selected following the recommendation of AgriZeroNZ’s private sector partners. Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis emphasized that Hewett’s strategic expertise will play a vital role in advancing AgriZeroNZ’s mission to support farmers in lowering emissions while maintaining their competitive advantage.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay highlighted the importance of AgriZeroNZ in accelerating the development of practical tools and solutions to help New Zealand farmers increase productivity without impacting jobs or farm operations. He noted that AgriZeroNZ currently has $46.2 million committed across its investment portfolio, covering 13 active projects, with 81 more under consideration.
The ongoing projects include cutting-edge research and development initiatives such as:
- Methane vaccines and inhibitors to reduce livestock emissions
- Innovative probiotics to promote sustainable farming practices
- Advanced pasture treatments to enhance carbon sequestration
Minister Willis stressed that the technologies developed through AgriZeroNZ investments will bolster New Zealand’s economic growth and enhance the country's reputation as a premium low-emissions food and fibre producer.
Rob Hewett officially assumed the Chair position on 3 February 2025, succeeding Sir Brian Roche, who completed his term on 31 October 2024 to become Public Services Commissioner. Fraser Whineray served as interim Chair until Hewett's appointment.
Ministers Willis and McClay expressed their gratitude to Sir Brian Roche and Fraser Whineray for their contributions and welcomed Rob Hewett as he begins his leadership of AgriZeroNZ.
