Singapore has unveiled a strategic budget designed to bolster support for workers and businesses, amid rising global tensions and in anticipation of upcoming national elections. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who also serves as the nation's finance minister, announced S$1.06 billion in household vouchers to offset grocery and food costs, along with S$2.02 billion in 'SG60' vouchers to commemorate the country's 60th anniversary.

Maybank economist Chua Hak Bin described the financial plan as a 'full-blown election budget', noting its wide-ranging benefits including vouchers, tax rebates, and direct cash handouts. This budget marks Wong's first since assuming office last year, and precedes a general election set for November. It is perceived as a key indicator of his popularity, with his People's Action Party expected to maintain its legislative dominance.

The budget further highlights initiatives to boost the semiconductor and biotech sectors, allocating S$1 billion to infrastructure and development. Wong also committed S$10 billion to environmental strategies focused on coastal protection and clean energy. Despite inflation hitting a three-year low, Singaporeans continue to face rising living costs, with consumption tax increases further adding to the burden.
