Ambitious Waterways Development in Assam to Boost Maritime Infrastructure
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced a Rs 4,800 crore investment for developing waterways and related infrastructure in Assam over the next five years. The investment will fund various projects, including ship repair facilities, alternative roads for ports, and a centre of excellence in maritime education, facilitating economic growth.

In a significant boost to Assam's infrastructure, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revealed plans for an investment of Rs 4,800 crore to enhance the state's waterways over the next five years. The announcement was made during the 'Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit'.
Sonowal outlined that the funds will be utilized for constructing a state-of-the-art ship repair facility, developing alternative roads for port access, and building new terminals. Additionally, the establishment of a centre of excellence in maritime education aims to provide skilled workforce to the shipping industry, with an aim to train 5,000 youth annually.
Highlighting the importance of waterways for economic growth, Sonowal noted the sector's advancement since 2014 and reiterated India's goal to become a leading maritime nation by 2030 and one of the top five shipbuilding countries globally.
