France is actively negotiating with Ukraine to secure access to its critical minerals, reflecting a broader international interest in Ukraine's resources. French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed ongoing discussions, highlighting a growing competition alongside the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to sign a minerals deal with the US, a move previewed by former President Donald Trump. However, France is also in talks with Ukraine to lessen its dependency on single-source mineral supplies. These resources are essential for various technologies, including lithium for batteries and uranium for nuclear power, which are crucial for France's defence industries.
French President Emmanuel Macron has tasked Lecornu with these negotiations. Lecornu clarified that France isn't seeking minerals in exchange for its aid to Ukraine but to secure critical resources for future weapons systems. He described the discussions as preliminary, indicating the start of a developing narrative.
