Contrary to common fears of job losses due to Artificial Intelligence (AI), a recent study by Bain & Company reveals India's AI sector is poised for significant expansion. Job opportunities are expected to soar past 2.3 million by 2027, creating a pressing need for reskilling and upskilling professionals as the talent pool might reach just 1.2 million.

Companies worldwide are grappling with a shortage of skilled AI professionals amidst increasing demand for AI solutions. According to executives, the lack of in-house AI expertise is hindering their ability to integrate AI technologies effectively.

Since 2019, there's been a 21% annual increase in demand for AI-related skills, with AI salaries rising by 11% annually. Yet, the supply of qualified candidates has not matched this growth, creating a talent gap that stymies AI advancements across industries.

“AI is pivotal to corporate innovation, but the absence of skilled talent can stall progress from plans to actual AI deployment,” said Sarah Elk, Americas head of AI at Bain & Company. The study indicates this talent deficit will persist until at least 2027, impacting global markets in varying degrees.

The United States may require up to 1.3 million AI professionals by 2027, but only 645,000 are expected to be available. Similarly, Germany and other nations like the UK and Australia are projected to experience significant talent shortfalls.

Saikat Banerjee, leader of Bain's AI practice in India, emphasized the nation's strategic position to become a global AI talent hub. However, by 2027, AI job opportunities could be 1.5-2 times higher than current talent levels. Reskilling and upskilling existing professionals in emerging technology tools will be crucial to bridging this gap.
