The European Union is striking back with new tariffs on US exports in response to the Trump administration's decision to increase duties on steel and aluminum imports, which stand at 25%. The EU tariffs, announced just hours after the US measures, target American industrial and farm products, valued at some 26 billion euros ($28 billion).

This tit-for-tat trade war underscores the growing strain on transatlantic relations, with the EU aiming its countermeasures at key pressure points in the US economy while trying to minimize damage to its own. The affected products aren't limited to metals but also include textiles, motor vehicles, and agricultural goods like beef, soybeans, and poultry from states traditionally supportive of the Trump administration.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed regret over the dispute, emphasizing the economic uncertainty such tariffs generate. She called for negotiations, stressing that “tariffs are taxes” detrimental to businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU echoed this sentiment, urging a diplomatic resolution to avoid damaging jobs and economic security.
