WTO's Trade Barometer Stagnant Amid Policy Uncertainty

The World Trade Organization's Goods Trade Barometer showed little change at the start of the year, indicating steady trade activity. Despite the reading above 100, suggesting growth, the WTO cautioned that ongoing trade policy uncertainties and potential new tariffs could negatively impact trade in the medium term.

The World Trade Organization has reported minimal change in its Goods Trade Barometer as 2023 begins, with a reading of 102.8, compared to December's 102.7. This nearly stagnant figure suggests continued, above-trend trade growth.

Despite this consistent trajectory, the WTO has voiced concerns over the looming threat of trade policy uncertainty. Such unpredictability, alongside the possibility of new tariff implementations, presents significant risks to global trade dynamics.

“Increased trade policy uncertainty and the prospect of new tariffs could weigh on trade in the medium term,” the organization warned, highlighting potential challenges that could offset the apparent stable growth observed in the barometer.
