India is grappling with delays in 637 key infrastructure projects, with a substantial portion affected under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme. Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said Wednesday that the primary causes are land acquisition challenges and financial setbacks faced by contractors.
Additional factors such as force majeure events and construction materials shortages have compounded these delays, Gadkari informed during a session in Rajya Sabha. The government, however, is implementing numerous measures to expedite project completion.
Efforts include streamlining land acquisition processes, enhancing the Parivesh Portal for quicker environmental clearances, facilitating online approvals for road infrastructure designs, and conducting multi-level review meetings with stakeholders. Financial repercussions vary, with some contracts including provisions for price escalations and penalties, depending on the responsibility for delays.
