Brazil is in active negotiations with China to construct a railway that will connect Peru's Chancay port—one of China's largest investments in South America—to Brazil. Planning Minister Simone Tebet indicated the project's potential for significant economic impact and increased influence for China in the region.
The Chancay port, inaugurated with the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping, has been deemed a critical investment by Beijing. It aims to facilitate trade and reduce maritime travel distances by an estimated 10,000 kilometers. Initially, a route through the Amazon was contemplated, but environmental and social concerns led to its rejection.
Tebet pointed out that after comprehensive discussions, a southern railway route was settled upon. This strategic development could link several Brazilian states, potentially transforming economic conditions by connecting with the ongoing West-East Integration Railway from Tocantins to Bahia's Atlantic coast.
