India Stands Firm Against US Tariff Demand: GTRI Analysis

US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has been scrutinized by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). The think tank compares India's position to other nations hit with similar tariffs following trade deals with the US.

Countries like the UK, EU, Japan, Indonesia, and Vietnam have faced heightened tariffs and offered substantial concessions, such as zero tariffs on US agricultural products and major investment commitments. However, according to GTRI, India has not yielded such ground.

Ajay Srivastava, GTRI's founder, notes that India negotiated in good faith but stopped short of making concessions that could jeopardize its agricultural sector. India's strategic decisions are seen as a shield against unilateral trade pressures, with Srivastava highlighting that over 90 nations face similar US threats, urging fair negotiations moving forward.
