The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is diversifying its income sources by entering the retail fuel market, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Friday. This decision emerges as the loss-making entity seeks to enhance its financial stability through additional revenue streams.

The project will see MSRTC partner with central and state governments in a joint business initiative, enabling the sale of fuel to both its fleet and the broader public. Having operated 251 fuel stations at its locations for years, the corporation plans to extend this expertise to retail outlets across strategic locations.

Sarnaik highlighted plans to establish 'Petro-Motel Hubs', combining fuel sales with retail facilities to drive business opportunities. With accumulated losses reaching Rs 10,324 crore in FY 2023-24, such ventures are crucial for MSRTC, which serves over 55 lakh daily commuters with a fleet exceeding 15,000 buses.
