In the state of Goa, a significant number of vehicles have surpassed the 15-year mark without undergoing the mandatory registration renewal process. Specifically, 1.89 lakh vehicles, including public transport buses, are affected, as revealed in a recent legislative assembly session on Wednesday.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho provided details in a written response, indicating that nearly 50,000 more vehicles are expected to reach the 15-year threshold by the end of the current financial year. The breakdown includes 1.02 lakh two-wheelers, 2,334 three-wheelers, 49,895 four-wheelers, and 2,365 buses.
To combat the challenges posed by older, potentially more polluting vehicles, the government has implemented the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy, 2023. This initiative incentivizes owners to voluntarily scrap their aged vehicles by offering tax concessions, thus encouraging the purchase of newer and more environmentally-friendly models.
