Maharashtra's Faceless Learner's Licence: A Misused Loophole?

The Maharashtra government has urged a temporary halt to the state's faceless learner's licence service amidst concerns over its rampant misuse and serious technical flaws, as revealed by state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Friday.

Launched in June 2021, the initiative allows applicants to use Aadhaar-based authentication to take online tests, bypassing physical visits to RTO offices. However, it has been plagued by issues like Aadhaar data manipulation and bypassing NIC's security measure, enabling individuals to fraudulently clear tests.

Troubling instances of unqualified drivers causing accidents and operating under the influence have surfaced. The government has tasked an expert committee with suggesting reforms, with a move to return to supervised testing until robust security measures are implemented.
