The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, the concluding accolade of this year's Nobel season, is set to be announced Monday morning, spotlighting achievements in economic sciences. Instituted in 1968 by Sweden's central bank in memory of Alfred Nobel, the prize highlights exemplary contributions to the field.
Last year's recipients, Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson, were awarded for their research on the prosperity gap among nations. The economists demonstrated that open, free societies tend to achieve greater levels of wealth, influencing global economic thought.
Despite being a secondary initiative to the original Nobel Prizes, the Economics Prize is traditionally presented alongside them on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's passing. To date, it has been granted to 96 laureates over 56 years, with just three previous female recipients.
